WEEKEND MUSICMAN

by Jonathan Leeder

I’m counting the days till I leave for New Orleans jazzfest. I can already smell the gumbo, crawfish etouffee, and jalapeno cornbread. I will not be indulging in any live music this weekend cause I’m saving my money and energy for next weekend, but if I were I’d prob be at these gigs….Thursday at Pianos is Tom Hamilton’s American Babies. Tom’s resume is being part of electro-pop band Brothers Past, but now he is more focused on American roots music and has some stellar musicians in tow to help the cause. Look out for Joe Russo of The Duo on skins.

On Friday night at The Mercury Lounge is Blip Blip Bleep, an electronic-rock project based out of Brooklyn. Sean Han, Brett Thompson, and Sarah Lee composed and recorded an EP that is a day in the life of an urban 20-something coming of age and struggling with work, love, and loneliness. It begins with the alarm clock ringing on yet another work day, proceeds through the daily grind, a night on the town, and ends on the way home in the early AM hours the next day. Time will tell how well this plays out on stage, but keep the faith.

Over at The Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night, Jesse Malin will be doing his “I’m a sensitive punk rocker” thing while playing songs from his rough around the edges sophmore album. Kind of reminds me of the guy who spends money on raggedy vintage clothes and perfects the just-got-out-of-bed hair style. Whatever he does, it works cause Springsteen now calls him a pal. De Novo Dahl, a pop outfit from Nashville will be opening.

On Sunday eve American Music Club will be performing at The Mercury Lounge. I remember these guys from when I was in high school. They took a ten year hiatus and are now back and trying to build a new audience. It may take some time, and it is certainly a different musical landscape, but hats off for jumping back on the horse.
