WEEKEND MUSICMAN

Jonathan Leeder

Ok, it’s officially chilly. The kiddies are back at school and their is tons of music, new and old in town this weekend. What a city we live in! From living icon’s like Madonna, to Afrobeat, to a Bee Gee’s heavy metal tribute, we got it all. “If you’ve got the money, honey, we got your disease….”

This Thursday eve at The Bowery Ballroom is Toubab Krewe who blend American and West African influences into a sound all their own. They developed their unique sound over the course of numerous extended trips to Mali, Guinea, and Ivory Coast, where they immersed themselves in the local culture and studied and performed with luminaries.

Friday night at Rehab on Ave B is Jersey pop singer-songwriter Laura Warshauer. Through her music, she examines loss, love and life. Laura has a knack for combining massive pop melodies and flourishes of folk. Her lyrical sensibility hearkens back to songsmiths like Joni Mitchell and Fiona Apple, while the music possesses a pop rock passion a la U2. Citay is at The Cake Shop if you’re lookin to rock a little harder. They take classic rock elements and stir in breezy acoustics, and harmonized vocals to bring something new to the table. Fans of mellow Led Zeppelin and The Beach Boys will dig.

So you couldn’t get tickets to Madonna at MSG. Boo-hoo. There are plenty of other options: Tragedy, a Metal tribute to the music of The Bee Gee’s are at the Bowery. Also, Bart Davenport, former frontman of SF’s The Loved Ones, will be performing solo acoustic at Piano’s.

Close out the weekend on Sunday with Cory Branan at Cake Shop. Cory started as a heavy metal drummer until he listened to John Prine and traded his sticks for a guitar. The world is a better place after that trade.
