The Bronfman Center for Jewish Life of NYU will be the site of an exhibition, “Home & Away: The Spaces We Inhabit” curated by Lois Stavsky and Danna Taggar. It’s a big show – thirty-one artists – with work running the gamut from paintings, drawings and murals to photographs and collages. The theme is the meaning of home.

Two Lower East Side artists who actually share a home are Richard Cramer and Carol Markel. Richard’s ink drawing of whacky cartoon birds floating in an azure-blue sky and perched on familiar LES signs like “Gertel’s Bakery Luncheon” is in the show. Carol has a series of photomontages called “The Secret Valley” in the exhibit. Based on photographs of houses she shot in rural Pennsylvania, they include images of ceramic figurines and cut flowers from vintage handkerchiefs.

The opening reception is on Monday, March 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. The Bronfman Center (in a beautiful townhouse with a carved teak facade, by the way) is open everyday and is located at 7 East 10th Street between University Place and 5th Avenue. Home & Away continues through May 13.
