The Lower East Side Business Improvement District (LES BID) is reaching back while looking forward and giving New Yorkers a taste of contemporary fare traditional flair. Every Sunday from July 1st through September 9th on Broome Street between Allen and Orchard we will be hosting Lower Feast Side: LES a la ‘Cart’ an interactive street fair that “reinvents” itself every week!
Adorned with pushcarts reminiscent of a time honored L.E.S., visitors will be able to sample the best in food and clothes and accessories from the oldest and newest stores on the Lower East Side and listen to the finest in LES bands from the Living Room. Added to all that a free Historic Walking Tour of the Lower East Side is being offered at 3pm each Sunday leaving from the LES Visitors Center at 261 Broome Street.
“What an ironic twist to our mantra ‘L.E.S. is more EXPLORE!’.” Says Roberto Ragone, Executive Director of the LES BID. “New comers to the area such as Roasting Plant will be right next to neighborhood staples like Russ and Daughters. Where else will you find gourmet coffee and old fashion New York egg creams in one place?”
The best part of this festival is that you can come back Sunday after Sunday and never see the same assortment of music, artists, boutiques or restaurants. Every Sunday reinvents itself with a new mix.
Make-up Mania will be face-painting children while giving grownups new summer chic looks. Whole Foods will be giving cooking demonstrations during the Sundays in August while The LES Ecology Center demonstrates “Green City Composting”. The Crowne Points Festival will be silk screening T-Shirts one Sunday while showcasing DJ Jim Coleman the next.
The LES BID’s community enrichment includes local restaurateurs letting youth from the LES food and environmental program, Food Cycle, work with and learn from them at the fair and learn about food preparation. “This is a really engaging community affair. Some of our restaurants, such as 88 Orchard, are going a step farther and making sure their food is not only tasty but nutritional by buying their day of produce directly from the Sunday Green Market on Clinton and Grand” says Ragone.
Local restaurants and boutiques include: 88 Orchard, Roasting Plant, BabyCakes Vegan Bakery, Russ and Daughters, LES Sandwhicherie, Isabella’s Oven, Whole Foods Market, Batista Mini Market, Jeffrey’s Meats and Saxelby Cheesemongers, Kaight Inc, Yes Collection, Tahir Boutique, Valley, Avon, Hello Sari, Make-Up Mania, Magestic Hosiery and Sportswear and more.
Local Musicians will include Living Room favorites: Kelly Jones, The Matthew Puckett Trio, Liz Tormes, Kristen Diable, Marykate O’Neil, Matt Duke, Matt Kanelos, Ben Arnold, Milton, Gretchen Witt, Ashley Jones, Greg Fine, The Danton Bowler Trio, Jill Stevenson, Katy Pfaffl and Pete and J.
The fair is open to the public and will take place every Sunday between July 1st and September 9th on Broome Street between Allen and Orchard. No reservations are needed for the free Historic Walking Tour at 3pm. For more information call Noelle Richards Frieson at 212-226-9010 or go to our website www.LowerEastSideBID.com
