SWEET MEET

Alex Shainberg, 3, checks out the different flavors at the ice cream tasting. He didn’t say which one he liked best, but he looked like he enjoyed tasting and wearing them all.

The founder of Adirondack Creamery lives on Grand Street in Seward Park. Local stores including Fine Fare carry his all-natural ice cream.

These are the pints in the hopeful enterprise of Adirondack Creamery. Good luck!

by Pat Arnow

Paul Nasrani, a Lower East Side ice cream entrepreneur let the neighborhood sample the cool goods on a recent Tuesday evening at a tasting in the Seward Park community room, at 383 Grand Street. Narsani wants people to know that the ice cream comes from hormone-free cows, and the dairy is less than an hour and a half from the city. And you can buy it at Fine Fare. With today’s consumers more aware that food which is produced nearby wastes less transportation energy, and supports the local economy, and that natural ingredients make more wholesome food, the Nasrani enterprise is good news.

A Seward Park resident, Nasrani left a corporate job to make ice cream full time, and he’s hoping to build the business in part by getting everyone in the neighborhood addicted. This shouldn’t prove too hard to do. The only ingredients in the ice cream are cream, milk, sugar and eggs—oh, and the flavors. There’s Barkeater (which is what the word Adirondack means in Mohawk), with English toffee in it. Kulfi has pistachio and cardamom. And don’t worry, you can still get chocolate and vanilla and chocolate chip.

Nasrani has been married for just a year, to attorney Simi Mir, who helps out with the business in addition to working at her law practice.

Their Flavors:

AdirondBarkeater
The name is the literal translation of the Mohawk word, Adirondack. Fortunately our bark is from delicious homemade English Almond Toffee which is folded into a special vanilla ice cream.

Whiteface Mint Chip
Named after the Adirondack high peak of Olympic Fame due to its white as snow color.  It is made with pure peppermint extract and soft dark chocolate chunks.

Kulfi–Pistachio Cardamom
Inspired by the dessert famous in South Asia, this flavor is made with chopped pistachio nuts and cardamom spice and as with our mint chip does not contain any green coloring.

Chocolate Chocolate Chip
Based on a rich cocoa without coloration which when added to our ice cream base results in a creamy, smooth chocolate flavor which is further enhanced with dark soft chocolate chunks.

Chocolate Walnut Chip
Similar to our Chocolate Chocolate Chip but with fresh chopped black walnuts added.

Vanilla
Made with a special blend of pure vanilla extracts which impart a rich vanilla flavor.

Flavors Coming soon:

Black Raspberry—made with a pure black raspberry puree.
Cherry Vanilla—rich vanilla combined with fresh all natural Oregon Cherries.
Peanut Butter Fudge—smooth creamy peanut butter with a decedent chocolate fudge swirl.
Coffee—contains freshly ground organic coffee so strong it will keep you awake.
Maple Walnut—Upstate NY Maple syrup and freshly chopped black walnuts.

I will definitely give Adirondack Creamery a try because of its mission and the support of local farmers. Being an ice cream lover, I have tried many brands like Ben & Jerry, Basket Robbin, Hagan Daz, Edys, Starbucks and Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. Vanilla is not vanilla because every brand uses different ingredients.
